The Coordinate Plane

Drag the orange point anywhere. The first number is how far it sits from the vertical axis, the second is how far from the horizontal one. Watch the signs flip as you cross into a new quadrant.

The point

x-coordinate
4
y-coordinate
3
Written as
P (4, 3)
Position
Quadrant I
Both coordinates are positive, so the point is in Quadrant I.

Distances from the axes

From the y-axis (vertical)
4 units
From the x-axis (horizontal)
3 units
The x-coordinate is the distance from the y-axis, not the x-axis. That catches almost everybody once.

Show

Turn on the ghost, then press Swap. The ghost and the point only land on top of each other when x and y are equal.
